ULTRASOUND SCANNIG OF FOOT

Foot pain is a prevalent issue, impacting the daily lives of a substantial portion of the adult population—approximately 19% of men and 25% of women report significant foot pain that hinders their functionality. Those particularly vulnerable include older adults, individuals carrying excess weight, and active participants in sports involving running and jumping. The primary culprits for foot pain often lie within the sole of the foot. In this context, ultrasound emerges as a highly valuable diagnostic tool, offering swift and precise localization and characterization of foot pathology. Its widespread availability, coupled with its cost-effectiveness, absence of ionizing radiation, impressive spatial resolution, multiplanar capability, and excellent patient tolerance, positions ultrasound as an ideal technique for scrutinizing superficial structures in the foot. Notably, ultrasound’s dynamic assessment capability surpasses that of other imaging modalities, and Doppler interrogation provides real-time insights into vascularity—a unique advantage. The capacity for extended field of view images enhances presentation, garnering increased acceptance from clinicians. Additionally, ultrasound proves instrumental in guiding interventional procedures. This review article comprehensively explores ultrasound features associated with common foot pathologies, offering insights into corresponding MRI findings.
