Sputum specimen collection stands as a pivotal, generally non-invasive process for diagnosing respiratory infections. While typically straightforward, at Hypro Diagnostics, we acknowledge the potential need for physiotherapeutic interventions in cases where patients face challenges in expelling fluid from the upper respiratory tract. Following the standard “deep cough” sample protocol in the early morning ensures unbiased results, with patients rinsing their mouths and depositing sputum in a provided sterile container. We, at Hypro Diagnostics, prioritize assessing the quantity and characteristics of sputum, emphasizing its thickness for effective laboratory investigation. In tuberculosis cases, we adhere to the collection of three sputum samples on consecutive days. Sputum induction, involving nebulized hypertonic saline, proves beneficial for patients struggling to produce sputum. In specific situations, such as persistent infections, bronchoscopy, utilizing a thin viewing camera, is employed to collect sputum samples for meticulous microscopic examination, aligning with our commitment to comprehensive diagnostic practices.
