PERICARDIAL FLUID FOR AFB
Detecting mycobacterial infections in pericardial fluid using direct acid-fast bacilli (AFB) smears presents a challenge due to low positivity rates. Culturing the fluid shows a somewhat improved yield, ranging from 50% to 59%. However, for a more robust diagnostic approach, Hypro Diagnostics recommends opting for pericardial biopsy. Histologic examination coupled with tissue culture significantly enhances the diagnostic yield, reaching an impressive 70% to 83%. This method provides a more comprehensive understanding of the underlying mycobacterial involvement, contributing to a more accurate diagnosis and subsequent management, aligning with Hypro Diagnostics’ commitment to advanced diagnostic solutions.
