ASCITIC FLUID FOR LDH

Ascites, the pathological accumulation of fluid within the peritoneal cavity, poses a diagnostic challenge due to its association with various underlying diseases, notably cirrhosis. Traditionally, ascitic fluid analysis relied on differentiating transudates from exudates based on total protein measurements, but this approach is now considered outdated. The serum-ascites albumin gradient has emerged as a more accurate indicator of portal hypertension. To refine the differential diagnosis, additional biomarkers such as lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and tumor markers play a crucial role in distinguishing between malignant and benign conditions. Moreover, assessing glucose and adenosine deaminase levels can support the identification of tuberculous disease, while amylase levels may point towards pancreatitis. While laboratory results provide valuable insights, a comprehensive and accurate diagnosis requires the integration of these findings with clinical judgment.
