This test gauges the presence of IgM antibodies against the Hepatitis E Virus (HEV), also known as Non A, non B ET Hepatitis. HEV typically causes self-limiting acute viral hepatitis and is a significant contributor to non-A, non-B hepatitis transmitted through the digestive system. The virus primarily affects young to middle-aged adults and is transmitted via fecal-oral routes, commonly through contaminated drinking water. Pregnant women, when infected, face severe risks, with up to 25% developing fatal hepatitis. Anti-HEV IgM levels rise during the asymptomatic phase, peak during symptoms, and then decline to normal levels within 3-6 months. Anti-HEV IgG remains detectable for an extended period, persisting between 2 and 13 years.
