Anticardiolipin antibodies are essential elements of the immune system’s response, targeting platelet membrane phospholipids crucial for blood clotting. When combined with lupus anticoagulants and beta-2 glycoprotein antibodies, these anticardiolipin antibodies significantly contribute to the irregular formation of clots in veins, leading to phlebitis, and arteries, resulting in arterial thrombosis. Their pivotal role is evident in antiphospholipid syndrome, a condition linked to recurrent second or third-trimester miscarriages. Notably, there are three distinct types of anticardiolipin antibodies—IgG, IgA, and IgM—each playing a unique role in the immune response and adding complexity to their involvement in vascular clotting disorders.
