The amylase test is a diagnostic tool that measures amylase levels in blood or urine. Amylase, an enzyme aiding carbohydrate breakdown, is produced by the pancreas and salivary glands. While a small amylase quantity is normal, elevated levels might signal underlying health issues. A healthcare provider, often a nurse, doctor, or lab technician, collects blood or urine samples for analysis in a laboratory. Specific guidelines may include fasting for 8 to 12 hours and abstaining from alcohol for 24 hours before the test. It’s crucial to disclose all medications taken, as certain drugs like aspirin, corticosteroids, diuretics, NSAIDs, opioids, and oral contraceptives can influence amylase test results. The test is often recommended to diagnose or monitor pancreatic problems, gallstones, cystic fibrosis, eating disorders, alcohol use disorder, or infections.
