The weight limit for most scanners is set at 350 pounds. Prior to the procedure, patients are required to drink 1 to 1.5 liters of barium over two hours. It’s recommended to arrive 15 minutes early with insurance information and any previous abdominal or pelvic images on a CD for comparison. During the 15 to 20-minute scan, breath-holding is necessary to prevent motion artifacts. The insertion of an intravenous line may cause a momentary pinprick, and the injection of contrast material can lead to a warm, flushed sensation, a brief metallic taste, and a momentary urge to urinate. While the procedure itself is painless, maintaining stillness is important for optimal image quality.
